What is the transmission doing?

The transmission was removed for a clutch replacement. The bolt was removed during the process and can't be replaced.

The car was driven in the driveway with no unusual behavior, but there's a hole in the side of the transmission and obviously something is loose inside.

The best way to find out is to drop the tranny and investigate the purpose of that bolt-My references don't cover that bolt sorry-

Thanks rasmataz. I can see the (nut) inside the casing through the hole and can manipulate it *almost* into position to replace the bolt, but it is constrained somehow.

Oh well, back onto the lift.

You had mistakenly removed the bolt for holding the reverse gear shaft.

The bolt is tapered at the end so once the internal threads are almost centralised, use the bolt to slightly tap and turn in.

Thanks for the diagram. The block is rotated about 30° from alignment and won't wiggle into place. Now that I know that it's part of the reverse gear, I'll try joggling the wheels on the lift while the transmission is in reverse.

If I have to take apart the transmission to fix this mistake, how many hours should I allow?

I don't have access to the labor time in our database but for me it should take about 4 hours inclusive of removal and installation of the transmission.

Try using a sharp pointer and with transmission in reverse and, slowly wiggle the hole into position. It is not really easy to move the shaft and you need to be gentle to avoid it getting stuck.
