99 GMC Suburban, rear differential replacement

had a rear differential replaced about 2 mos. ago on my 99 GMC Suburban. Used replacement part now has failed (I had to pull off the freeway when I lost power, nearly losing control.) Mechanic informs me that all of the teeth have ground away, that If I had brought it in earlier the part could have been salvaged. Claims I should have seen leaking, heard grinding. Is any part of this due to MY negligence? What is a reasonable expectation for a customer, regarding installation of used parts by an automotive garage?

forgot to clarify that the work was done by a local garage. ALSO - I brought the truck back in after a couple of weeks to have brake noise examined (they did the brakes and the differential at the same time.) Wasn't this an opportunity for the garage to identify the "leaking" they now claim was the cause of the differential failing?

it sounds like you had leaking axl seals and never had them replaced and it led to failure of the rear end.lack of oil.yes the shop should have told you and even maybe put some oil in.
