what would cause the fuel pump to not engage

fuel pump engages intermittently starts and runs, shut it off then it wont start

It could be the fuel pump itself, its relay or wiring, or engine sensors. Is the MIL indicating?

what is an MIL, ANSWER; IT COULD BE THE FUEL PUMP ITSELF, IT RELAY OR WIRING, OR ENGINE SENSORS.Is the MIL indicating?
