engine rattles

1999 gmc jimmy engine rattles when placed in drive or reverse. Runs fine when cold until idle changes. does not rattle in idle. The rattle seems to be coming from the front of the engine but does not occur when in park. Also, has an exhaust leak or noise coming from tailpipe. Almost like a backfire.
