How must would it cost to replace a fuel pump in a 99 Ford Contour? I live in Derry NH

I don't know about your part of the country? I charge 100 bucks for diagnostics. 50 bucks an hour for labor, two hour minimum. If I run into something I don't expect, it will cost more. Different shops charge different labor rates and parts are extra.

The fuel pump itself for this vehicle lists for about $450 from the dealer. There are some aftermarket pumps made that may save you a little money but remember, you get what you pay for., I have seen many issues arise after using aftermarket pumps vs OEM. The flat rate labor time is 2.2 hours so you can calculate that from the shop's labor rate. For example... at a labor rate of $80 per hour, that would be $176 in labor. You should also replace the fuel filter at the same time.

Car came without a manual and we have been trying to locate the fuel pump. Does someone know where it is?

Pull up the rear seat and remove large rubber grommet. you can access pump but it will not fit through the hole. I took a pair of visegrips and bent outside edge back to remove strainer and pump. you can bend them back down when you are done. not real professional but it will work.

the best I can remember is pulling up pretty. try 1 person on each side and jerk upward.

Electrical problem
2000 Ford Contour 4 cyl Automatic

i replace my fuel pump few days ago because the gauge didn't read how much gas was in the tank. gauge still doesn't work properly, but i think i did something wrong. a day after replacing the pump, my battery died completely. bought brand new battery, same problem: keeps dying when plugged in. when i unplug the battery, it still has juice. i assume that something is draining the battery and i wonder if the fuel pump is staying on or is it the relay. the alternator is fine as well. i haven't checked the regulator on the alternator. before replacing the pump, the car was fine. now, not so much. that's is the only thing that was touched and messed with. please tell me what is draining my battery.

Wow we got the fuel pump out but the fuel lines connects disintegrated... normal? Will the ford parts dealer be able to order for us new fuel lines and do you need anything special to attach those? please any info we need that you know would be a huge help. We will be going in tomorrow morning for the pump. Thanks again, you guys are awesome!

When you turn the car off can you still hear the fuel pump humming in the tank? Also, when disconnecting and connecting back the battery, listen for a relay to click. If it does click then it must be stuck and needs replaced.

Hi, what tore up fuel lines on pump or lines that disconnect from pump? if they are lines on pump they come with new pump module. if the lines going to pump tore up you will have to replace them from dealer. most fuel lines either have a clip that holds them in place or a tool from autozone that slips in behind line to disengage.use caution when working around fuel tank the vapors are rising and spreading out and a spark would cause an explosion. disconnect battery and disconnect power plug at pump. clean surface well and use a light coating of heavy grease on rubber o-ring to seal new pump module with tank ring.after you install new pump turn key on but do not try to start for 10 seconds to pump up pressure.any other questions reply and I will try to help.

i never head the pump before and i don't hear a clicking noise when plugging the battery back in.

okay, your fuel pump could be wired up wrong then, are you certain all connections were put back where they should be when replacing the pump? also test the fuel pump relay

I recently bought this car from a private owner. I bought the car knowing that the alternator was bad. I bought the alternator but haven't had a chance to put it on yet due to the labor required. I drove the car around a little and it died on me. I charged the battery thinking that was the problem and it still would not start. It tries to turn over, but will not start. The first time i had this problem, i changed the fuse to the fuel pump and it started up just fine. Two days later the car died and had the same problem. No fuel pressure in the line. This time the fuse is not blown so i have no idea what to do. I changed the fuse again anyway and it still will not start. I also checked the power to the fuel pump and it is getting power. I think it is the fuel pump but my father insists that the problem is something else. Can anyone give me advice on what to do?

Did you check the actual voltage reading on both side of pump connector. If you have good voltage and ground at the pump and no pump action, I suspect the pump. Did you try banging on the bottom of the tank, to see if pump will take off running?

i only checked it with a test stick with the lightbulb to see if it was getting power period. and the alternator itself isn't bad i don't think, it's just the volage regulator which is inside the alternator

If you already have the alternator w/voltage regulator I would go out of your way and change that first since you already have the part. Or atleast check to see if it is bad for sure because even if you get the problems in the fuel system worked out your car will still not work right if the alternator/voltage regulator is bad. I would also have the battery checked out just to make sure.
How did you check for fuel pressure? Do you have any kind of readings for the fuel pressure? Can you get a voltage measurement at the pump? Does you car turn over? if it does, does it seem to turn over slower then normal? Anymore infomation would be a great help

I have a 99 Ford Contour that apparently has to have the fuel pump repaired. Is it worth it to go ahead and have it fixed or should I just scrap the car? A bit of background I also just got a new clutch, and when I bought it 6 months ago the previous owners had put in a new starter, battery, tires, and brakes.

the cost is really the only reason. I was quoted 800 to fix it and that seems a bit steep for an older car. The rest of it is in good running condition as far as I can tell except the heat and air don't work but that doesn't bother me. I was more wondering if I fix this is that the start of my car going down hill and costing me more and more in repairs.

You can't always look at things in a cost vs value comparison. There is an ongoing cost to owning a car, whether it be payments or maintenance. The key here is to not throw good money after bad. You need to determine what the car holds for you in the future and that's not something that I can do for you. You need to get an unbiased opinion on the condition of the rest of the car to see if it's worth fixing.

Hi I have a 97 ford contour with a 2.0 in it. It will turn over but will not start. When I push the valve by the fuel rail no fuel comes out, so I put a new fuel pump in it. I also can't hear the pump running. But I checked for voltage and it looked like there was voltage at the pump, however I didn't have a wiring diagram. When I put a little gas in the intake it will fire up but only for a second or two. Any ideas?

Check the fuel pressure with a fuel pressure tester if its within specs-How's the fuel filter/intank pick-sock strainer

Ok, I don't have a fuel pressure tester, but I took the fuel line off at the fuel filter and turned the key on and no fuel came out. The strainer is brand new with the pump I put in. It's like the pump isn't getting power but I was getting a reading with the volt meter at the pump connector.

Will do, you wouldn't have a wiring diagram for the fuel system in this car would you? Or can you tell me which pins on the fue pump are power and ground

The inertia switch has no power with the key on, and I don't know which relay is the fuel pump relay. I was able to narrow it down a little bit by jumping the relays to see what they did but other than that I don't know which one is for the fuel pump. And I dont know where the fuel pump fuse is either. Do fuel pumps when working properly, at the fuel pump get 12.6 volts like the rest of the car?
