Driving the truck the RPM jumps up and down and sometimes misses the gear and or dies but the funny part is it will only do this in drive, if i shift it to 1 or 2 it has no issues at all and thats what is stumping me, i want to say its a trans issue but a shop says i need a new wireing harness

if the shop says you need anew wiring harness I assume you already had this checked. so I would go with that. it may be a bad harness or connection problem.

us oldguys aren't any good? it has to be scanned for codes to see what the code if any is. the harness operates the trans electrically so it may be trying to find out what gear it is in. check fuses and relay in pic then check ground on lh front of engine. if that doesn't help it has to be scanned for codes. and check harness at trans for connection, bent pins etc. and whether or not it has rubbed through someplace.
