Need help please

I have a 99 dodge durango 318 4x4 and it will not shift unless I unhook the positive cable to the battery for atleast 30 seconds and then rehook it...do you know what this could be?

Your transmission control module is recognizing a problem and putting the trans in a limp mode to get home without further damage. You are just erasing all the self diagnostic data when you do that. You need to get it to a qualified trans shop ASAP before you do even more damage by driving it.
