I have been working on my 99 chevy tahoe for a while. I recently replaced the fuel pump with a new Airtex unit with a new wiring harnes. It doesn't seem like the float is working correctly. I have a 30 gallon tank in it but when it get down to about 10 to 12 gallons left in the tank my gauge will be into the red zone just about on E after only about 240 miles. I have been averaging between 12.5 and 13 miles to the gallon. Then when I fill it it only takes 19 to 20 gallons and the gauge stays on E for some time after it is filled. What could be wrong?

It sounds like you may need to remove the pump and check if there is something hanging up the float, if it isn't floating, or there is a problem with the rheostat itself.
