What could cause the gears on the bottom of the distributor to shred? I also assume that the cam shaft would be damaged as well. Also would this require a complete engine rebuild, due to metal shavings?

Well usually oil pump siezes and takes out gear. But high milage causing cam bearing wear can also cause

Would either necessitate a complete engine rebuild or new engine? Would the shavings necessitate a rebuild?

Can't say without seeing if oil pump is locked and condition of cam gear. What is milage ?

the reason your gear wore is it's a steel roller cam and you need a different gear than the one that's on there. Any auto parts store should be able to get it or have it for you. Best thing to do here is drop the oilpan and clean it out. the cam gear should be ok but take a peek at it fromt the top if you can. your oil filter will catch alot of the crap that has been destroyed.
