1999 Cadillac DeVille - Can you suggest the best rear shocks to use for light purpose towing? The rear of the car is low to begin with, and I think the shocks are done. Car has 122k miles on it.

Shock absorbers have nothing to do with ride height. That's the job of the springs. Rear springs are generally very easy to replace on GM cars but they can be more complicated on Cadillacs if there is any type of auto-load-leveling system. Those usually use a special shock absorber that has an extra air bag-type spring built in to supplement the coil springs and provide the adjustable part of the system.

If your car is ridng low in the front or rear, first have any load-leveling system inspected to see if it is working properly. If your car doesn't have that system, expect to need new springs. There are many aftermarket springs that increase load carrying capacity while maintaining a smooth ride.

Thank you for the reply. On the second issue, no...I have never seen that message come on the dash system. I've been told recently that the car may very well have this auto-adjust level-ride type of mechanism, and I guess I better have that checked out.
