Water pump was recently replaced at local repair shop. Wife drove car for only a day and was losing coolant again. Now the shop says timing belt cover gasket is leaking, with lots of labor $ to replace.
Should they have detected and repaired timing belt gasket at the time of water pump replacement? Would this have saved me labor charges if they were both repaired at the same time? Thanks!

On 3.1, you don't have timing belt, you have timing chain. Maybe I misunderstood your post? The timing chain has nothing to with you losing coolant.

You're right, I actually meant timing chain cover. However, a response to an earlier question acknowledged losing water at the timing chain cover gasket, a problem which I had previously been unfamiliar with. With your response, however, I am now confused again!
I thought I understood that the timing chain cover gasket is a water seal. Is this correct?

Your correct, could be a bad gasket.
