VW GOLF 1998 fuel pump fuse burns

Hi, my fuel pump fuse #18 keeps shorting with a spark as soon as I turn on the ignition. Where can I check the cabling for a short? Could it be the O2 sensor wiring? Can I disconnect it to rule that out? Help!

A fuse that shorts fast is a short to ground, usually a bare wire, pinched wire, possible shorted relay.

If you disconnect O2 sensor you will get a code, which should go away when you reconnect it.

Hi, I checked the wires from the fusebox to the fuel pump and found nothing. Disconnecting the fuel pump (accessed from the rear, under the three screw round panel, and trying the ignition still shorts the fuse with a spark.

Is there a way to test the relay? Can the relay be the cause? Or maybe the O2 sensor that shares the fuse? How can I disconnect the O2 sensor? (I don't even know where it is).

BTW, AAA says the cause is a faulty fuel pump, but having disconnected it from the back and having the same problem rules this out, doesnt it??
