I have a 98 Tacoma that the speedometer, tachometer and odometer have quit working. It started last year in the fall. I noticed that it would work in cooler temperatures which led me believe it to be a electrical problem. The check engine light came on and I went in to Auto Zone and they told me the error code was p500 and that it was a speed sensor. I bought one over the internet but did not put it on. The weather turned cold and it worked fine, check engine light went off. As spring came this year the weather turned warm and everything started acting up again, so I replaced the sensor on the transmission. Nothing changed, it continued to come on and off and now has not come on today. When I look around at parts I'm seeing a wheel speed sensor. Is this for a 98. What am I missing? Please Help.

DTC P0500: VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR FAULT

CAUTION: If ECM replacement is instructed in following testing, always ensure ECM connectors and ground circuit are okay. If either are suspect, repair and repeat
testing to confirm ECM malfunction.

Circuit Description

Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), driven by speedometer cable, outputs a signal from instrument cluster to ECM. Instrument cluster converts signal to a more precise waveform for ECM. Code is set when ECM does not
detect any signal while vehicle is in motion. Possible causes are:

? Instrument cluster.
? Speed sensor open or short circuit.
? ECM.
? Speedometer cable.

Diagnosis & Repair

1. Test drive vehicle and check operation of speedometer. If speedometer is not functioning correctly, see INSTRUMENT PANEL article under ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT section. If speedometer
is functioning correctly, go to next step.
2. Access ECM behind glove box. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect cruise control ECU Green connector. Cruise control ECU is behind right kick panel. Ensure shift lever is in Neutral. Lift and support rear of
vehicle. Turn ignition on.
do not under any circumstances replace the ecm as this could be a false indicator like a speedo cable bad unlessyou have the electronic trans.if yo have the speedo cable make sure to see if it is broken.if you cannot find the fault take to a pro as it may be a poor connection at ecm.

Would you happen to know what the ABS wheel sensors should ohm out at? I have noticed that after everything stops working that the ABS light comes on and comes on and off randomly. Could this be part or the problem. I did ohm the sensors and got a reading of 1.7-1.8.

no idea what they are. and can' t find it in out manual. normally ifyou have ohoms you are ok, it's normally a broken wire but you need to scan to see why the abs is giving a code or not.
