starter Clicking

my 1998 Toyota tacoma 2.4L starter only clicks wont turn over, if it is the contacts inside the starter are bad can i replace them myself, also i had the starter tested advance auto tested it 3 times came home put the starter back on still wont start..

first check to see if your battery is in good shape. if it reads 12.4 with a digital gauge then get another or hav eit load tested to see if it's ok. you may have a bad solenoid on the starter and not letting engough power through it.

Same problem here on 2001 Tacoma; starter didn't operate even when jumped by another vehicle. Battery read 12.5V, so I checked the starter relay, starter contacts, ground wire. All ok. Removed starter & had it tested at parts store and it was ok too.

The problem? Battery had an internal short. Found it by disconnecting battery and hooking truck power & ground cables to another truck's battery using jumper cables. It fired right up. Replaced battery and it works perfectly.

A high rate discharge test would be able to tell you if the battery is bad even it might show 12.5 volts. If you had connected the voltmeter and note the voltage drop when you tried to crank the engine you would notice the voltage dropping to lower than 10 volts.
