I had a ball joint replaced this time a year ago, and I have the same problem again on the same side of the car, does this mean it was not repaired properly first time round?

If it wasn't repaired properly, how would it last a year? You didn't bother to say what the problem is. Worn ball joints typically cause clunking noises so I have to guess that's what is happening. There's a dozen other parts that also cause clunks and they also wear out. Have the steering and suspension systems inspected before you assume the new ball joint is noisy.
