fuel pump Replacement

It looks like you have a trap door that will help you remove the pump without removing the tank. Here are diagrams to help you get the job done. Check out the diagrams (Below) Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

I'm trying to find out if its hard to replace a fuel pump for a 1998 Subaru legacy?

You need a copy of the manufacturer's service manual so you can read through the pages of instructions. That will show the procedure for all the variations of what you didn't list. The fuel pump is inside the gas tank, and accessing it depends on the body style. In some applications the pumps are different depending on engine size, which you didn't list.

You can also go to the top of this page, point to "Repair and Service", then click on "Manuals" to go to a web site where you can buy a subscription for your car model. That will include all the manufacturer's stuff plus a lot of additional information like recalls, service bulletins, service hints and tricks, and repair solutions.

I am wondering if this is a repair for a novice or if this is something I should take it to a mechanic for?

I've read their is a convenient access panel in the truck that provides access to the pump area on the top side of the gas tank (elimating the need to remove the tank).

check to see if there is an access port. If there is, that will make it much easier. It will be a mater of removeing the wiring and disconnecting the fuel lines then the pump. If there is no access port, the tank needs to come out and it can be a pain.

1996 Subaru Legacy. The problem I have is that sometimes it will crank but not start. After a few times of cranking it, it will start after 5-30 minutes. In December I did replace the fuel pump and that helped for awhile and then the problem surfaced again. Lately, it seems to be happening more often.

Any ideas? Thank you.

Sir,
I checked for a spark last PM when car would not start and no spark was noted at coil. Checked two different wires and also at the plug end. As I do not have the time to acquire code readings, would you suggest installing a new coil? I can get one at O'Reilly's locally for about $110.00. To obtain an analysis to obtain code is around $49.00.

Do you have the 2.2L or 2.5L engine?I wouldn't just guess a coil guessing gets expensive really quick.You should be able to get a basic code reader for 49 or less and it would be yours to keep.Do you have a multimeter?
