The only two items in this 'affordable" car that are digital are the odometer and the radio station/time display. Both have stopped working. I believe I've checked all the fuses it could be and I will soon need to renew the plates and do an E-test, so I rely need to see the mileage.

I didn't see a 98 sunbird in our database? Did you mean a sunfire? Will the vehicle inspection fail your car because the odometer doesn't work? The state I live in doesn't do vehicle inspections.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. (couldn't get into my account!)
You are correct, it is a Sunfire not Sunbird (blonde moment)
Unfortunately, the Ontario governments way of getting more $ from us is to force us to do these every other year. No pass, no new plate sticker! It doesn't matter if the car is 1,2 or 50 yrs old.
I will certainly need the odometer reading for the E-test and to get the new sticker.
I hope you can help me, I'm afraid of what a Dealership will gouge me to fix this and even if I can't do it myself, it's better to be prepared if I DO have to bring it in and not be viewed as an easy mark.

If the radio display won't work, check the fuses in the diagram. Not only check the fuse, check for voltage on the fuse circuit. Use a test light. One fuse is hot all the time, the other goes hot with the key on.

As far as the odometer, Without being able to pull the instrument cluster, I don't know? You could get a rebuilt instrument cluster or used instrument cluster. I don't have much luck with used anything.
