why does an intake manifold gasket problem cause overheating sometimes and then has no effect at all at other times? I understand it needs to be replaced, I just don't understand how it goes back to working fine sometimes. Thanks.

are you adding anti freeze? the air pockets caused by loss of antifreeze cause overheat. but only after sufficient loss.

well, ideally you replace gaskets if you know that's the cause of leaks/loss of coolant. there are lots of variables to consider when trying to predict the behavior of a coolant problem.
