My windshield wipers work but when I put them in the off position the don't go down they just stop strait up on my window what could be wrong with them?

Your windshield wiper motor is mounted to a bracket that has a little metal tab on it that the crank arm assembly has to hit in order to park the wipers, in a lot of cases this park tab in either bent or broken, and if bent can be adjusted. This was my problem. I've seen other posts where this is attributed to ice in the motor, but in my case the little tab got bent from using the wipers to try to scrape off the ice. Whoops. Once I got off the cover and the blades to get to the motor, my tab and the matching tab on the arm were chewed badly. I was able to bent the tab over farther and it's working great.
