Vehicle speed sensor / odometer how do i know which one is defective

i bought a second hand 1998 nissan sentra ex saloon. how do i check if the VSS or the odometer is the defective one. Thanks

was it a private owner? maybe odometer was deliberately made defective?

also nissan had a recall on this. loosen (check for corrosion) the screws on the back of the cluster and make sure they're tight. if necessary you can resolder broken wire on back of cluster. VSS out means speedometer stops working.
