Ineed help finding & identifing the EGR (exaust gas recirculator)I believe those are the initials

The EGR valve? Is one of the reasons my 1998 mazda 626 won't pass emissions. I need to find the egr and maybe what it looks like. Is it electrical,vacume controledor what. Is it posible that the electronic(if it is electrical) be ok and maybe yhe vacume could just clogged. Eather way would it also make the idle(it changes back and forth to slower to faster idle) when it slows it idles rough.

If the egr valve sticks open it can cause high low idle rough idle etc.What codes do you have?What are the exact code numbers do you have?Also what size engine do you have?

At emmissions the codes where general and also my wife filed the paper work so I don't have it available. I can find out what codes if any that it has. The motor is a 2.5

It would really help if you could get those exact codes they would really help.Its number 7 in the diagram i also posted a pic of what it looks like.It could be sticking open if i could get the codes if you have any that would help also.Keep me posted.

I'll have to get back to you on the codes. Does the egr get plugged on the vacum lines keeping it from working properly

That egr valve is vacuum actuated with electronic feed back.The vacuum supply to the egr valve to open it doesnt get plugged.The exhaust and vacuum ports under the valve on the intake manifold do get plugged though.Remove the valve and start the engine for a few seconds the engine should race and you should hear a loud exhaust leak.If you do then you know the ports are clear.See if you can rent a hand vacuum pump to make sure the vacuum diapharm on the egr valve is holding vacuum and you can use that to see if the valve is sticking.

In answer to your question the code on the emissions reject(or DTC) are PO400 exhaust recirculation flow. Also the other rejects are Po142 O2 sensor circuit malfunction (Bank 1(2) sensor 3)
PO172 System too rich (Bank 1)(2)
I have replaced all the O2 sensors except the fartherest 1 back, does this agree with codes? Also would the last sensor cause the System to rich code or would that petain to egr. I have replaced the air filter,repaired crack in input hose to air filter. aLSO HAVE RUN DENATURED alcohl to clean fuel injectors etc.I know this is asking alot of questionsat once but I will donate some more after awhile. ALSO I AM HESITANT TO REMOVE EGR BECAUSE WOULDN'T i POSIBLY BE CAUSING A EXHAUST LEAK IF GASKET DOESN'T COME OFF CLEANLY

The P0142 is the down stream one under the car in the exhaust pipe.There is one o2 sensor in each manifold one o2 sensor in the middle of the exhaust and the rear o2 sensor under the car.Its not for sure that the o2 sensor is the cure for the P0142 though.Did the P0142 or the P0172 come back after replacing the o2 sensors?As far as the P0400 goes you need to check the ports and valve like i said before.If the gasket sticks you can peel it with a razor blade and replace it.Or you can try reusuing the gasket i have done that many times..Remove the valve and start the engine for a few seconds the engine should race and you should hear a loud exhaust leak.If you do then you know the ports are clear.See if you can rent a hand vacuum pump to make sure the vacuum diapharm on the egr valve is holding vacuum and you can use that to see if the valve is sticking.

On your reply, I replaced the other o2 sensors some time ago. The last sensor was the only one I didn't replace at the time. I have the other sensor and will replace in a day or three. All the codes were from trying to pass emissions to tag. I will check egr when I have sensor replaced. I hope sensor or valve are good as replacment parts are expensive. $200-300 If ports are not clear what is the best way to clear?

Unfornatly they usually dont tell you how the egr ports run bout most can be cleaned with a egr drill bit i just bought one myself.I bought the 21" drill bit by itself made by the same company as the one i posted the link to.Just got it today looks really nice still waiting to try it out.
