how do you rule out a starter problem vs a fuel system problem

I have a 1998 KIA sephia w/ approx 150,000 miles on it. Currently it is cranking but not firing. I just put a fully charged battery in it, and still does not turn over. I tried jumping it to add a little bit more power, still not turning over. I have noticed that the ground wire from the battery is warm after trying to start the car. Prior to this problem, the car would seem "gutless" for a few minutes after starting then seem to have more power. Any help would be great. Thanks!

If the starter is turning the engine, it is good. As far as the neg battery terminal getting warm, that is normal unless it gets hot enough to melt the insulation. There is a lot of power going through it when you try to start the engine.

as far as the no start, you need to check if the engine is getting spark and fuel. One is most likely missing. Based on what you said, it sounds like a fuel problem. Go to our homepage under the DIY section for directions and a video showing how to check both.
