1998 Jaguar Xj8. I'm having problems going to first gear from a stop. It seems to skip to second gear and drives fine after gets going.

What you have is an internal failure of the transmission possibly the forward drum is broken. Does it bang when you put it into gear? If so, that drum is broken.
