transmission stuck in first gear

honda accord 98 ex 4cyl transmission is stuck in 1st gear but if i shut car off it will shift but i have to keep doing this to get it to shift out of 1st gear. my car when cold runs fine but then when warms up it wont shift out of 1st gear and if i put it in _n_ going down the road and shut off and restart it will shift, and as i am driving i have to keep putting in _n_ to d4 to get it to shift period and also going down the hwy it will drive fine then all the sudden it shifts back down to 1st gear at 65 mph and it is very dangerous what is the problem ???

Could it be my trans be going out? Or speed sensor?

It could be a couple things. Yes, speed sensors play a role in shifting as well as a governer, shift solenoids... If the check engine light has come on, have the computer scanned to identify if there are trans trouble codes. If there are no lights, make sure the trans fluid is full and clean. Without a light, it will need checked by a trans tech. Anything I say from here will be a guess.

Ok the 2 looking barrel things on the front of the trans are lock and shift solenoids.. those causes for the trans to shift gear and hold. Now if your torque converter is failing then when it gets hot you norm have to wait an hour before it cools before you can drive again. Alot of times people confuse the diagnosis as on the Honda trans filter is dirty or blocked then the trans does not get pressure required for the torque to spin. Even if you carry car to aamco or trans place they will tell you to rebuild it or replace it because the make more money that way!
