Hi we just bought a 1998 Holden vector a week ago and the engine light came on but everything seems ok what do I do and is it safe to drive? everything is driving ok and it revs harder at lower gear but unsure of what could be the matter

You should get the trouble codes pulled. Some parts stores will do this for free. There is something electrical that is failing. So, the car may leave you stuck somewhere when it fails completely. I cannot say whether it is safe to drive or not. If the engine is over-revving or revving higher than transmission, slipping, you may have a bad shift solenoid and you could be damaging the transmission.
