hi i have a 98 ford windstar that has a leak in what i believe to be the return line. i ran dye through the powersteering system and it bubbled very clearly out of the hose attached to the black line wich goes into the bottom of the power steering resivior. my questions are first is this the return line? and second the section with the hole in it is a rubber hose that connects to a metal line at the rack. is there any reason why i couldn't just replace the section of hose instead of the whole line?

Yup. There will be no pressure in that hose. Hack that baby off and replace it with a new piece of hose that can stand up to petroleum product, (not vacuum hose). If the rubber hose is crimped onto the metal tube, cut a slot in that crimp with an air cutoff tool, peel it open and throw it away. The line will be barbed to prevent the hose from sliding off. Put the hose clamp on beyond that barb.
