overheating problem

Just for your additional information (not that some of this information will matter with what is going on with the over heating but...) the oil pressure switch and 2 new headlight total assemblies were replaced within the last 6 weeks or so, this was done in order to obtain a road worthy for the above mentioned car. The car was purchased about 5 months ago...and shortly after purchasing the car it started to over heat..and that is when the thermostat housing was replaced by a mechanic while the car was still under the used car warranty. However it started to over heat again (however the dealership was giving us a hard time about fixing the car and were always trying to delay things as a result the 3 month warranty expired). As stated before the radiator then was replaced about 4 to 6 weeks ago, and at that time the hoses were all checked and all were all found to be ok, and new hose clamps were purchased and put on the hoses to make sure they were all properly secured.

It sounds like the cooling fan is not working correctly but to be sure let's use this guide to find the problem.

Engine Cooling problem
1997 Ford Falcon 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Hi There

I have ford falcon 1997 model with dual fuel gas and patrol . Last month, Gasket for was blown up. After that it is start running rough, i went to my mechanic couple of times, he has tuned the gas, but it was still running rough. Last Tuesday It was stop while running on gas. Today I went to mechanic again he has changed thermostat .But car is still getting hot.
I just found that after about 20km, temp. gauge showing more than half way. it is still in normal rang. but it is hot than usual. Engine sound is also changed.

Please advice me the possible solution.

Still getting hot: Check the radiator and water pump-could be the gauge is out of range/calibration

mechanic changed the thermostat again. he changed from A180 to A160 and told me that it will help to cool down the engine more quickly. Water pump is working.
Radiator also seem to working fine as well.
no leakage anywhere.

Let us see if this tick help to fix my problem.

Temp. gauge is stays in half now.
But car still runs rough and sometimes automatically switch off engine on red lights. Some reason it is losing power.

Get the mechanic to block check and pressure test the cooling system-cooling fan/s are they working properly and is there's any leakage

hi I have the problem of engine coolant dissappearing and have to fill it up every week or so. I only use the car lightly maybe 70 miles per week. Just recently i have noticed that when i turn the engine off that an excessive amount of coolant comes out of the radiator overflow hose. ( so far the car has not overheated and remained in the normal temp range mainly due to being refilled) is there a quick fix as it is our second car and is not worth spending $500+ on. Thanks David

Get it block and pressure tested

Hi there,

As the last post says get the presser test done, these engines are notorious for warping heads, also they suffer form casting sand blocking the radiator, a back flush will not shift it, it will have to be cleaned by a radiator repairer, this is a very common problem with falcons.

overheating only when in idle and when carry heavy load up long steep hill,Ive changed everything,still the same,notice a little water come out of tailpipe when cold,i thought that's normal,but thick black silt inside of end tailpipe,I cut inside of thermostat out (better flow),and after that i started the car in 30 to 40 seconds car ran rough had to use gas pedal to keep car going and about a 1/2 a cup water came out of tailpipe,so i think maybe head gasket ? (I know i have to put another thermostat in),please help longways from home.

Try block and pressure testing it to rule out the headgasket, cracked head, block and intake manifold leak-

hello rasmataz,already had new (50/50 water/coolant) in car when cut out old thermostat, put new thermostat in no water coming out tailpipe now,doing pressure test,first i took out all spark plugs using one spark plug at a time from front cylinder to back cylinder bridging terminals 30 and 87 on stater relay,to check noise difference in each cylinder front ones sound OK (from 3rd from front, to back of motor) sound only a little difference if at all,next done compression from front to back of motor

don't know where to start checking intake manifold for a leak (can you tell me),had a look and listen touching hoses for air leak looks OK to eye & ear,if you think the compression is OK, then i might go buy a brand new 3row heavy duty radiator next week,as mine i got from doggy radiator place,(think they just painted it)it supposed to be reconditioned ,took for another drive heat OK only when drive flat roads or in park engine running,(when in park and hold brake on while press down accelerator to bring up revs the temp will rise fast,when take pedal off temp comes down the same with hills after i get to top of hill then temp comes down,also to add is i didn't let heat,over halfway on gauge but coolant came out of overflow hose from coolant reserve tank where you put water in,also when i tap brake pedal off & on while engine going in park, temp guage jumps back and fourth 2 millimeters,i think i have said enough any ideas would be much appreciated,PS how do I donate for your help mate.
