1998 ford explorer,will only run by putting it in the "2" and then putting it back to "D"

It sounds like something failed internally in the transmission. This is not an easy fix.

I attached a picture of the interior of the transmission. It looks like the 1-way clutch has failed.

You will need either a rebuild or a replacement transmission.

It sounds like it could be related to the shift linkage. Can you tell me approximately where you heard the crack come from? Also, is this a column shift or floor shift vehicle?

Now, if you look at pic 1, it shows the location of what is called a digital range sensor. That is where the linkage attaches to shift the gears on the transmission. If you can, make sure the vehicle can't move and check to make sure nothing is loose or damaged there. If possible, have a helper shift through the gears while you watch to confirm it is moving smoothly, and not loose.

If you look at pic 2, it shows where the cable / linkage attaches to the range sensor. Pic 3 shows how the cable is attached to a bracket (which must be secure) and again where it attaches to the range sensor.

Now, when looking at pic 3, to the left would be a cable which runs to the inside of the vehicle which may be stretched or damaged. That's why I need you to confirm the sensor is moving smoothly and nothing is loose.
