1998 Ford Explorer replacement shock

My ford rides rough, had replaces the shock with original equipment type in the pase, I am looking for shocks that will give me a smoother ride, is this possible?

new shocks can only do so much as it's a 4wd and those normally ride rougher than a 2wd.....partly because they sit higher and suspension
