Can you replace air shock (front) with regular light truck shocks?

Without using a conversion kit? (98 Expedition 5.4, 4WD) I have air shocks and the front one need replacing. spending that king of money is draining, so i am looking for an alternative. I have heard that it is and isn't possible to do this. so before i anything i would like to hear your opinion.

Every penny has its worth. Regular shocks are not designed for air compression functions so I wonder where you get the idea it can work.

Sending a mare to the derby is not going to win you any prizes.
