When I turn the key over, nothing. If I have someone hit the starter while I turn it over then it starts. Is it a loose connection? clinoid bad?

Next time this acts up, don't do anything that will make the starter work. We need it to stay not working so we can troubleshoot it. Measure the voltage on the large battery cable stud on the starter solenoid. A test light will work okay for this. You should find full battery voltage there. Keep measuring while a helper tries to crank the engine. If that voltage goes away, we gotta look in that cable for a bad connection, or, . . . if you have your meter / test light grounded on the engine, look at the negative cable too.

If the voltage stays steady, move the probe to the other large solenoid terminal with the braided wire that goes into the motor. Go right to the stud, not the cable. You should see battery voltage there only when the helper tries to crank the engine. If you don't, but the solenoid is making a nice healthy single clunk when it engages, suspect the contacts inside it.
