the main pulley has separated from the harmonic balancer on my 1998 chevy lumina how does it face the engine ?

I was able to get the pulley of the harmonic balancer and I need to know which way the pulley should go back on

Are you referring to a pulley that's bolted on or has a rubber strip sandwiched in between the hub and cast outer ring?
