1998 Audi A6 door lights

Both sides should come on together. The best suspect is broken or frayed wires between the driver's door hinges.

the wires are still all together and in the boot but ill take apart and inspect.
i thought it might be the door switch but i couldn't find one anywhere. and its a four door and both doors on driver side don't work and both doors or side work.

meant to say, both on passenger side work.

Unless you have something unusual, don't the lights on all four doors turn on when any one door is opened? If so, when two don't work and two do, you know the switch for the open door is working, and the likely suspect are those wires to the inoperative lights for the other two doors. If it IS normal for the lights to only turn on for the doors that are open, and not the lights on the other side, then I'd agree with your suspicion of a switch problem, although there still could be a broken wire feeding those switches. If you can't see a door switch on the "B" pillar, (the pillar at the back of the door where the latch is), or less commonly on the "A" pillar where the hinges are attached, then it will be built into the latch assembly. Those can be designed as part of the stationary part of the latch on the "B" pillar, but it's much more common to put them in the assembly inside the door. Those do seem to cause a lot of trouble.
