1997 Toyota 4Runner Chatter When Clutch Released

I recently had a new clutch assembly installed in my 3Runner 4cyl with manual transmission. The flywheel was not replaced. A new clutch master cylinder was installed, but not the slave. Before the new clutch assembly was installed, there was not chatter as the clutch pedal was released. After the installation, there is chatter. My mechanic thinks a new flywheel is needed, but why would it not be a problem with the old assembly and now be a problem with the new assembly? Also, my mechanic is suggesting that I drive it for a few weeks with the chatter to see if the problem will gradually go away. Is that a good strategy?

First thing you need to do is find out is what is causing the noise. Flywheels do not produce chatters.

There is a possibility the pressure plate is not evenly seated causing the noise but if the mechanic recommends giving it a running in, it is ok, just make sure he accepts liability for this job and problem.

It's not so much a noise. It is a vibration or shaking of the car as the clutch is released. The vibration goes away when the clutch is all the way up.

Juddering can occur when the flywheel is not flat, disk is contaminated with oil or the quality of the disk is suspect.

It might go away after some driving.
