Squeaking noise coming from wheels

Hi I seem to have a funny noise, a squeaking noise coming from somewhere on or around my wheels when I'm reversing. It's only when I first start my car. Once it's been running for a while I seem to be able to reverse with no noise. I originally thought it was something to do with my brakes as they were wearing thin but I have recently replaced my break pads and i still seem to have the problem. Any ideas would be brilliant as I have no idea! Lol. My car is a P reg rover 420 sli, with a 2 litre engine. Thanks

If there's half shafts on the front, you might suspect an axle seal in the differential housing. Dousing the area with a spray-type lubricant will quiet it for a few hours to a few days if it works its way in there behind the inner cv joint.

There is a tool you might be able to borrow or rent from an auto parts store that borrows them called the "Chassis Ear". It is a set of six microphones, a switch box, and headphones. You clip the microphones to suspect points, then drive around while listening with the headphones. You can move the microphones around to zero in on the source of the noise. Be aware that many mechanics have never seen or even heard of this tool. Suspension and alignment mechanics use it to find rattles, squeaks, and other noises.
