on my 97 Pontiac sunfire all of my lights came on (break light, check engine, oil, and so on...) my headlights dimmed, then it kept going "ding ding ding" like the door was open or something and I could smell plastic burning

It also stalled out a couple times. The car was parked for about 8 months. This was the first time it happened, someone told me i blew me alternator. But i kinda disagree.

does car run now? can you check alternator output? it should read over 14 volts at battery posts.
