1997 Pointiac Grand Prix - Gas Gauge

I would unplug the gas tank connector that goes to the fuel pump module and see if the gauge drops to make sure the gauge itself isnt stuck or a shorted wire or circuit somewhere.If it is the sender you could try slapping the tank to see if it frees up the sender.But no telling how long that would work or work at all.

Where do I find the gas tank connector ? Is that on top of the tank?

I know some of the gm cars have a pig tail you can unplug not sure if your car has one but there is one on the fuel pump module on top of the tank.

spoke to mechanic and he says it needs a new sending unit.

do these vehicles have a combined pump and sending unit or are they seperate? I cannot seem to find the part on autozone.com

The gauge is doing the opposite of what I've ever seen ... instead of reading empty all of the time it just registers full or partially full.

Yes i just looked it up on there there is two listed with a vin break so you can tell which one you need.Just plug your car into there catalog and click the fuel tab its listed under fuel level sensor.

great... not sure it is a job I can do.... I believe my mechanic said it would run around 200-250 usd to change it... does that sound right??

I finally found it on autozone and the most expensive is about $40.00... so the labor seems a bit high but then again, removing the tank is perhaps a big job.

Post the the link for that sender for 40 it sounds like a universal one not the one you want that snaps on the fuel pump module like your old one.Its not that hard to install one of those.

yeah thats a universal fit one not one that would take the place of your old one and snap on your fuel pump module.

My mechanic called me says it would be like $299 for the pump and sending unit as one.

Can you share the part that woudl be right at rockauto so I can see the cost there?

Sadly, this car has had many problems. I am trying to get it squared away for my son who is going back to school this fall.

My list of repairs are:

Fuel Sending Unit
Front Sway Bar
Lower Control Arm Bushings
Blower Fan / Resistor (only high works)

Alright one thing at a time lets start with the sending unit i cant send a link to the actual part on there.If you give me the last six numbers of your vin i can give you the part number and you can type in there and look it up on that site.There are two different ones for your car with a vin break.

Also open up your glove box somewhere in there there should be a sticker with a bunch of rpo codes on it.See if code wfa is on that sticker?

just checked the glove box and I see no stickers at all.

Iam so sorry i lost track of your response my fridge died what mess there have had a lot going there.Take a look for the rpo in the drivers door opening and the spare tire cover in the trunk.

Finally get back to you... No sticker in the door or lid of spare... however there was a sticker on the trunk lid with three digit codes... none of them had a "wfa" on it.
