1997 Nissan Pathfinder randomly dies

the car dies and I clean the rotor bug it fires up and runs for days. this has happened several time over the last year. last time the distributor cap had a burn hole in it. I replaced the cap and bug then and it ran fine for a month or so. I'm puzzled. also there are no engine lights on.
any idea what I should check?

Check that the bushes in the distributor are not worn causing the shaft to run off centre
