1997 1800cc mitsi legnum Gas Gauge Not Reading Properly

the gas gauge does not go down any further than quater of a tank the fuel light comes on and the car runs out of petrol about 60km later. the gauge still says there is quater of a tank left

EITHER YOUR TANK SENDER IS STUCK

OR

THE GAUGE ON THE DASH IS BAD

(MY MONEYS ON THE GAUGE)

IF YOU UNPLUG THE SENDER WIRE AT THE TANK, AND THE GAUGE DROPS---I'D GO WITH THE "BAD SENDER" SCENARIO....THE GAUGE MAY NOT BE BAD AFTER ALL
