The Engine Computer turns on the Check Engine light when it detects a problem, and it sets a diagnostic fault code in memory. There are hundreds of possible causes and only a few of them cause running problems that you will notice. The place to start is by having the code(s) read. They will get you into the circuit or system that needs further diagnosis. Many auto parts stores will read them for you for free.
