1997 GMC Sierra gear shifter stuck in park

My 97 gmc sierra gets stuck in park. To get out of park I had to push back and forth then shift out park. So now I have to leave it in neutral to start and turn off. dont know what the problem is. Can you please bell me?

check to see if your cable works ok there are two to that truck also have your shift interlock checked.

Thanks for responding but where are the two cables located and where and what is the shift interlock on the 97 GMC Sierra?

one cable runs under the truck and the other runs from inside the truck to the one under the truck. the sift interlock is pointed out in pic and make sure to check fuse as well.
