backing up makes grinding noise

I have a 97 Ford ranger 2wd 5 spd when I put it in reverse and start backing up it makes a grinding noise and barely wants to move all my other gears are fine though what could this be

possibe internal trans issue? have you checked driveshaft/joints?

Drain the fluid and check it for bits and pieces.

It could be either bent shifter components or worn gears or chewed up gears. If I recall correctly, that tranny has a side inspection plate that you can remove and take look inside with a flashlight. You should be able to see worn or damaged gears.
