I have 1997 Chevy Tahoe 5.7 4WD. before I had to install new intake manifold intake gasket it was running fine so while doing that I changed spark plugs and new distributor cap and button taking great care to line up the new button with the old one. It cranks up and runs great and smooth on the highway but when I shift into drive it runs rough and quickly cuts off if I am stopped with the car idling. Suggestions?

Clean the throttle-body, check idle air system. It is possible you have a vacuum leak? While idling in park does it idle ok? If you hold the throttle open just a little, does it idle ok?

At the moment, I can't rule out a vacuum leak?

if I hold the throttle open when in drive it is OK when stopped at a stoplight for example. how do I check the vaccum system for a leak?

If it idles ok at a stop with throttle closed, don't think the idle is a problem? If it won't idle ok at a stop, throttle closed, in drive, definitely check the idle air system.

You can spray carb cleaner around gasket areas, if the idle changes, you have a vacuum leak. Anytime you use a flamable spray there is a safety issue about starting a fire. Safety is your responsibility.
