what do i need to do to when the car is not shifting gear when in drive

the rpm are between 3 and 4 and does not drop and the speed stays at 40 but if i shift manually form 1 to 3 and then into drive it works and it will shift only if i start in 1 gear on so on.

sounds like a valve body issue in the trans. you need a shop to pull the valve body and find the failure.
