How do I know if my alternator is going bad?

1997 Acura mileage: 140,000. How do I know if my alternator is going bad? Also, how do I distinguish the difference between the alternator as opposed to the battery being bad?

A load test will tell you the condition of the battery. The output of the alternator should be approximately 14 volts and 40 amps at 1500 Rpm.
