nisson maxima does jumping time affect the valves

My son's Nissan Maxima jumped time and the timing belt and parts to fix cost $500. I may can buy a motor with aroud 100,000 miles for that much. My question is does jumping time adversely affect the valves.

Maxima uses timing chains and tendency to skip time is minimal unless the engine has been turned anticlockwise. If it has jumped a tooth, it is not going to affect the valves but if it had skipped buy too many tooth, it can affect the valves.

You can buy an engine for the same amount but bear in mind that the labour for replacement of the engine is not going to be cheap and with a replacement engine, there are other things such gaskets etc to contend with.
