1996 Mitsubishi Pajero engine problem

my engine 4A31 is very weak. i have two ecu. with the old one the engine runs weak with a lot of black soot in the tailpipe and the newly acquired ecu the engine starts and dies out with only two cylinders firing that is cylinder 1 and 4.
