1996 Mercury Sable will move in reverse but does not go in drive. Any suggestions?

Check the transmission fluid condition and level if okay you have an internal tranny problem to find out more get it pressure tested-

In my owner's manual it shows transaxle fluid only. Is that the same thing as transmission fluid?
