i have a 96 mercury cougar and the altinater went out so we changed it and about 5 minutes after we changed it the battery we had in it blew acid out and the battery gage went all the way up to high. so we bought a new battery and the battery gage will not work there is no power to the car and none of the normal gage lights are working. and we can not figure out what is wrong with it.

Either you didn't correctly hook up the voltage regulator or the regulator failed. It's allowing the alternator to overcharge the battery. If you don't fix it, you destroy the new battery as well.

Next check all of your fuses and relays. You may have had a spike that blew out one/more of these. Also, voltage spikes will do damage to gauges and computers as well. Hopefully yours are OK. Good luck.
