1996 Mazda Protege Driver side CV Joint

I can't get to the CV joint to pull it out because the driver side joint goes behind a metal plate with 4 bolts. This plate looks as if it holds up the transmission. How do I get the Joint out from behind.

see pic for axle. if pulling intermediate axle the carefully remove bearing bracket securing bolts securing intermediate shaft. carefully remove shaft without damageing seal
